The pilot flies a private plane to Wales and lands at a closed RAF base

Updated: Nov 25, 2020

A man flies a private jet from Surrey to Wales and lands at a closed RAF base so he can "go to shore".

Flight tracking data published by the Ministry of Defense (MoD) shows the aircraft took off from Fairoaks Airfield in Surrey and landed in the RAF Valley in Anglesey on May 25.

But the RAF Valley was closed for a spring bank break while repair work was being carried out on the site.

The pilot attempted to call air traffic control several times during his approach but received no response, according to a Defense Ministry report.

Despite this, he proceeded to land the aircraft and land on Runway 19 which was closed for maintenance.

RAF Valley fire crews said it attended the scene as an emergency, assuming the aircraft experienced flight difficulties.

The military police then visited the pilot to find out what happened.

The pilot reportedly told officers he had flown to Wales "to go ashore".

When the pilot was informed of the restrictions being put in place in Wales due to the ongoing pandemic, he reportedly told them that "it is okay because he was [Covid-19] two months ago".

A North Wales Police spokesman said: "We were contacted by counterparts from the RAF Valley at 1.04pm on Monday 25 May, reporting that a light aircraft had made an unauthorized landing at the air base.

“The pilots are handled by the military police.

"While the incident is primarily being investigated by the RAF and the Civil Aviation Authority, the North Wales Police are currently considering potential breaches of Covid laws in Wales."

The RAF Valley is also home to Anglesey airport, which serves daily commercial flights to Cardiff airport but has a strict system for landing private aircraft.

Pilots need to ask permission before landing at base.
